Biography & Background of Billy Collins

With his simplistic and seemingly obvious style of writing, poet Billy Collins has managed to captivate Americans’ attentions and launch them into reflections about their own lives.  Believed to be one of the first poets since Robert Frost to receive such high critical acclaim combined with popularity, Collins crafts contemporary poems that captivate readers and resonate within their souls.  Each of Collins’ poems takes on a different tone, whether it is a witty one, a mocking one, or even a nostalgic one.  Yet despite these differences, each poem subtly conveys important life lessons of wisdom and knowledge, making them popular with much of the American public.  Collins has now published eight collections of poetry, and his fame has made him one of the most popular contemporary poets.  By employing techniques that enable him to relate to his readers, Collins’ career as a poet has earned him the title of US Poet Laureate from 2001-2003, another title as the New York Poet Laureate from 2004-2006, and a spot as a regular guest on National Public Radio.
